I know, you want a cup or two of coffee first thing in the morning in order to function.
What if there were something else you could do first thing in the morning to change how you feel throughout the entire day? Something that would make you feel positive, filled with energy and peace?
Would you be interested?
Here are a few things to try to change how you greet every morning:
Set An Intention – As strange as this sounds, it seems effective. What we think about we bring about. I don’t recall who said that, but it does happen. When we’re grumpy, we tend to attract all the other grumpy people around us. When we’re happy we similarly attract the happy people. If you could choose what your day will look like, what would it be? That is what “setting an intention” means. Visualize how you want to feel during the day ahead. How can you make it happen?
Express Gratitude. There is a movement around the world today to practice the “attitude of gratitude” in the belief that when we appreciate what we have, we tend to have a greater feeling of satisfaction in our life. Some people contemplate gratitude as they shower in the morning. Others do it via a journal at their bedside and either the last thing at night or the first thing in the morning, that is what they do.
Relax. Years ago I learned a technique to help me relax and temporarily disconnect from the world for a few moments. I would rub my hands together, generating a bit of heat in my palms. Then I would place those warm palms against my closed eyes and cradle my head in my hands. A couple of things happen when you do this. First, you stop “seeing” the world through everyone else’s eyes and begin to “see” the world with your heart. It is also an excellent way to immediately disconnect from a stressful situation.
Drink Warm Lemon Water. Instead of reaching for coffee first thing in the morning, instead drink warm lemon water. Squeeze the juice of about a quarter of a lemon into room temperature water, then add about a quarter cup of boiling water to bring up the temperature. This helps our digestive system to get going before we actually eat anything. We also have given our body a chance to establish a more alkaline base, giving us a better chance at staying balanced throughout the day. Eating a diet high in processed foods makes us more acidic. Starting the day with lemon water helps to reverse that process as we slowly change our eating habits.
Breathe. The simplest method of calming ourselves is through the regulation of our breath. We breathe naturally, for without it, we would die. But to use our breath to relax us, try this very simple exercise. Breathe in for a very slow count of four, pause for a count of one, then release the breath for another very slow count of four, pause for a count of one. Repeat at least three times. This method of regulating our breath brings about an immediate response from our body that reduces our blood pressure, our pulse rate, and our stress levels. This breathing technique can be done while standing in line at the grocery store, at a red light, or even during a stressful meeting at work. Try it. You will be amazed at how well you handle a stressful situation as a result.
